Terrace to Prince Rupert

Sealions of the North Coast

Continuing west along the Yellowhead Highway to Prince Rupert you will follow a narrow and winding highway beside the Skeena River. Several rest areas and Provincial Parks are found along the way.

Port Edward:
The pulp mill and fishing community of Port Edward is located 4 km (2.5 miles) off of the Yellowhead Highway on Skeena Drive.

Prince Rupert:
This gateway to the north is a transport hub for highway, air, railway and ferry. BC Ferries sail between Prince Rupert and Port Hardy, on Vancouver Island and to the Queen Charlotte Islands as well as the Alaska Marine Hwy System with sailings daily to Alaskan ports. Situated on Kaien Island, a natural deep, ice-free harbour allowing freighters from around the world to take on cargoes of mineral ore, coal, grain, lumber and pulp. Boat charters for whale watching, fishing for salmon, halibut and other ground fish as well as good accommodation are available here.

Museum of Northern B.C:
Artifacts that outline the history of the region and a guided archaeological harbour tour may be enjoyed here. Behind the museum are carving sheds with some of the region's most talented artists at work. The museum is located at 1st Avenue and McBride.

Kwinitsa Station Railway Museum:
Displaying the history of the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway, this museum is located near the downtown waterfront.

Chatham Village Longhouse:
This award winning longhouse built with huge cedar beams is adjacent to the Museum.

Pacific Mariners Memorial Park:
Overlooking the harbour, this park is located next to the Chatham Village Longhouse.

The Grizzly Bear Sanctuary is northeast of Prince Rupert with one of the largest known grizzly bear concentrations in the world. One escorted group per day may visit this sanctuary logging and hunting are prohibited.
